Jobless Rate Rises In Red Deer Region

The unemployment rate in the Red Deer Region rose nearly half a percent last month. The latest figures from Statistics Canada show the local jobless rate at 8 percent in December, up from 7.6 percent in November and 6.2 percent in December of last year.
The highest unemployment rate in the province is currently in Calgary where 9.6 percent of the workforce is without a job. The Banff-Jasper, Rocky Mountain House, Grande Prairie, Peace River and Athabasca areas had the lowest rate at 6.2 percent. Figures for the Wood Buffalo Region remain unavailable.
Alberta’s jobless rate is 8.5 percent, down half a percent from November but still up from 7 percent during the same month last year.
Nationally, the Canadian unemployment rate checked in at 6.9 percent last month. That’s up from 6.8 the month before but down from 7.1 percent in December 2015.
The highest unemployment rate is currently in Newfoundland at 14.9 percent. The lowest is in B.C. at 5.8 percent.
