How online casinos are looking to A.I. to address problem gambling

Online gambling can lead to addiction which is an incredibly serious problem that can ruin lives. But online gaming is also big business, and casinos are always looking for ways to get an edge over their competitors. Recognizing the potential pitfalls of addiction, gaming sites are anxious to keep the best interests of their loyal players, front and centre. A new tool they’re turning to is A.I., which offers the promise of better understanding customers and perhaps even predicting when they’re about to go on a losing streak.Â
Can A.I. help with something as complex as gambling addiction? And if so, how? In this article, we’ll look at how A.I. is being used in the fight against gambling addiction and what the future may hold for this technology in this arena.
How A.I. can help identify problem gambling
There are a number of ways A.I. can help identify problem gambling behavior. For example, machine learning algorithms best analyze customer data to look for patterns that may indicate a problem. It includes sudden changes in betting behavior, large sums of money being spent, or repeated attempts to chase losses.Â
In addition, A.I.-powered chatbots or virtual assistants can engage with customers and provide information about responsible gambling. These chatbots can also offer support and resources to those who may be struggling with gambling addiction.Â
The future of A.I. and gambling addictionÂ
It’s still early days for A.I. in the fight against gambling addiction, but the potential for this technology is significant. As A.I. gets better at understanding human behavior, it will become more and more effective at spotting the signs of problem gambling and offering help to those who need it. In the future, we may even see A.I.-powered therapies that are specifically designed to treat gambling addiction.
As with any technology, there are also risks associated with using A.I.. For example, it’s possible data from problem gamblers could used to train machine learning algorithms. This could make the algorithms better at predicting gambling behavior. It is great for casinos to target ads and promotions at those most likely to gamble excessively, which could ultimately worsen the problem. But if used responsibly, A.I. has the potential to be a powerful tool in the fight against this devastating disorder.
The future of A.I.-assisted casino securityÂ
It’s no secret that casinos have long used A.I. to help them keep an eye on their customers. Cameras and other surveillance tools are everywhere in casinos, and they’re only getting more sophisticated.
A.I.-assisted security systems can spot potential cheating at gaming tables, track the movements of known criminals, and even identify problem gamblers, a definite asset for online sports bettors.Â
In the future, these systems will only become more sophisticated and widespread. They may even be able to predict when a gambler is about to go on a losing streak and take steps to prevent it.
But A.I.-assisted security is not without its opponents. Some people argue it infringes on privacy rights and could be used to target certain groups of people unfairly.Â
The benefits of using A.I. for problem gambling prevention
- A.I. can help identify at-risk individuals and intervene before developing a gambling problem.
- A.I. can also help customize treatment and prevention plans for individuals struggling with gambling addiction.
- A.I. can provide real-time feedback to gamblers about their behavior, helping them make better future choices.
- A.I.-based interventions have the potential to reach a larger audience than traditional prevention and treatment methods, making them more cost-effective in the long run.
What are the challenges involved in using A.I. for problem gambling prevention?
Some of the challenges involved in using A.I. for problem gambling prevention include:Â
- Ensuring that the data used to train the A.I. system is accurate and representative of the population at risk for developing a gambling problem.
- It is developing effective ways to intervene with at-risk individuals identified by the A.I. system.
- Evaluating the long-term effectiveness of A.I.-based interventions in preventing or reducing gambling problems.
- Addressing privacy and ethical concerns that may arise from using A.I. to collect data on individuals’ gambling behavior.
Challenges involved in using A.I. for problem gambling prevention include the need for data from large numbers of gamblers and the potential for A.I. systems to be biased against certain groups of people. However, with the right safeguards in place, A.I. has great potential to help reduce the harm caused by gambling addiction.Â
Using Technology to Help with Problem Gambling:Â
There are several ways that technology can help people who are struggling with problem gambling. Some of these methods are more well-known than others, but all of them can be effective in helping people manage their gambling habits.
One of the most popular methods for managing problem gambling is self-exclusion, using technology to track your gambling activities and limit your access to online gambling sites. It can be an effective way to help you stay within your limits and avoid gambling when you feel vulnerable.Â
Another way that technology can help with problem gambling is by providing support and information. There are many helplines and online resources that can offer advice and support to those struggling with their gambling. These resources can be a valuable way to get help and learn more about managing your gambling.
Technology can also help you stay in control of your gambling. Many apps and websites can help you track your spending, set limits on how much you can gamble, and get reminders when you have reached your limit. These tools can help keep you on track and help you stick to your goals.Â
There are several different ways that technology can help with problem gambling. If you are struggling with your gambling, consider reaching out for help and using some of these resources to stay in control.

Alberta’s Sports Betting Industry

The limited nature of sports betting opportunities in Alberta makes it difficult to judge just how successful a full launch will be, with only single-game sports betting allowed since Bill C-218 was passed in 2021.Â
However, projected legislative changes that look set to take place in 2025 should provide the regulatory framework required for a more comprehensive betting market, with a focus on online operations.
To get a better idea of betting in Alberta, we asked Lewis Mitchell who explained that offshore betting sites have been able to cater to the needs of consumers. The convenience offered by online sports betting is something that the retail industry can’t compete with, and the wide range of betting markets, enticing bonuses, and selection of payment methods make it a popular option.
At present, the only online sports betting operator licensed to run in Alberta is PlayAlberta, a government-run operator that is regulated by the Alberta Gaming, Liquor, and Cannabis Commission (AGLC).
The new regulatory framework was set to be implemented at the end of 2024, but the project was delayed. The popularity of Ontario’s online sports betting market, which has seen significant growth, has encouraged other provinces to look at ways they can enjoy the revenue it would create and the improved protections they could offer their citizens.
Albertans have Canada’s highest spending on gaming per capita, and this statistic has led experts to believe that it would welcome a more open online sports betting industry.
The province is home to one of Canada’s youngest adult populations, and a legal betting age of 18 would be conducive to a successful online sports betting market. Another benefit for the 4.9 million inhabitants of Alberta is that Canadians don’t pay tax on winnings.
The wide selection of pro-sports teams in Alberta would also help with a launch, with the Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Wranglers, Calgary Stampeders, Edmonton Elks, Calgary Roughnecks, and Calvary FC just some of the options for local sports fans to get behind.
Alberta is in pole position to become the second province to allow commercial online betting operations and will benefit from insights available from Ontario, helping to avoid potential pitfalls. The industry would provide a welcome boost to provincial finances via tax revenue and improved employment.
The opportunity to allow other sports book operations will alert existing live-betting operations including Enoch’s River Cree Resort and Casino and Eagle River Resort, as well as the Stony Nakoda Resort and Casino in Morley, Starlight Casino in Edmonton, Calgary’s The Grey Eagle Resort and Casino, and the Casino Lethbridge.
The province will likely follow the lead of other regions that allow online betting markets by implementing application and license fees, with license fees requiring annual updates.
The limited nature of the existing sports betting market in Alberta leaves significant room for growth. The wide variety of sports and betting markets available for locals to explore will provide great competition for potential new betting apps.
