Graffiti Free Red Deer
Did you know that graffiti vandalism is a property crime? The Central Alberta Crime Prevention Centre has taken a lead role in the Graffiti Free Red Deer Strategy, which was implemented earlier this year. The Graffiti Free Red Deer Strategy marks a partnership between The City of Red Deer, Compliance, The Downtown Business Association, RCMP, and The Crime Prevention Centre, with each partner working diligently towards a graffiti free Red Deer.
The City of Red Deer is already well on its way to tackling the issue of graffiti vandalism, through the Community Standards Bylaw which sets a hefty fine for those charged with graffiti vandalism. The First offence is fined at $2500, $5000 for the second, and $7500 for the third – these fines are in addition to any criminal charges that are laid.
Residents who have been the victim of graffiti vandalism are encouraged to send the approximate date, location, and picture of the graffiti vandalism to [email protected]. If a resident sees other public or private property tagged, please contact the City of Red Deer Compliance at 403-342-8328. If you see graffiti vandalism in progress, this is a crime in progress and can be reported to 9-1-1
If your property is vandalised with graffiti, it is important to remove it as soon as possible. This is especially important if the language is vulgar or if it includes messages that promote hate. One of the best ways to prevent the re-occurrence of graffiti vandalism is the quick and timely removal, as it shows that the property is cared for.
For additional information and tips on prevention, or to purchase graffiti removal products, please contact the Crime Prevention Centre.
