Eight Local Motorists Facing Impaired Driving Charges After Weekend Checkstop

Published

4 minute read

Police checkstops and roving patrols throughout Red Deer last weekend resulted in eight motorists facing impaired driving charges.

Mounties say another couple also face multiple charges after colliding with another vehicle while attempting to flee a checkstop in a stolen car.

Around 9:30pm on December 3rd, RCMP allege a man driving a Nissan Sentra fled from a check stop they had set up on the 67th Street bridge. While fleeing the scene, the man struck a white Toyota Rav 4 in the area of 71 St and Gaetz Avenue. After that, the suspect driving the Sentra then fled the collision scene and hit a parked car-hauler trailer. At that time, the male driver and female passenger deserted the Sentra and proceeded to flee on foot.

Once EMS and fire staff arrived on scene, the 35 year old male driver of the Toyota Rav 4 was taken to hospital and treated for injuries that are serious but non-life-threatening.

RCMP say Police Dog Services pursued the pair of suspects to the Aladdin Hotel, where Mounties took the two into custody without incident. The male driver and female passenger from the Sentra were taken to hospital to be assessed for injuries sustained in the crash, while the woman was discharged. The man remains in hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Police say the red Sentra had been reported stolen out of Red Deer the morning of December 1st.

A 31 year old Red Deer man will face charges of obstruction, two counts of failing to remain at the scene of a collision, two counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm, possession of stolen property and several Traffic Safety Act charges.

A 44 year old Red Deer woman faces charges of failing to remain at the scene of a collision and failing to comply with a recognizance. Their names will not be released at this time as the charges have not yet been sworn before the courts.

Meantime, roving patrols by RCMP on Friday, December 2nd resulted in four drivers being charged with impaired driving, five being charged for driving without insurance, one for producing an invalid insurance card, and several more for license plate infractions. The Saturday night checkstop resulted in four drivers being charged with impaired driving; in addition, two novice drivers received 30-day license suspensions and had the vehicles they were driving seized for a week as a result of having any amount of alcohol in their systems. One driver whose blood alcohol was between .05 and .08 had their license suspended for three days and their vehicle seized for three days. Another driver had their license suspended for 24 hours for driving under the influence of marijuana, and police confiscated a small amount of marijuana from the vehicles well.

RCMP say they will continue to run checkstops and roving patrols throughout the holiday season to seek out impaired drivers, in accordance with Red Deerā€™s Annual Policing Plan which outlines a commitment to safer roads.

ā€˜Donā€™t Write About The Laptopā€™: Two Reporters Allege Outlets Killed Stories About Bidens

Published on

From theĀ Daily Caller News Foundation

ByĀ Harold Hutchison

ā€œI was covering Biden at the time, and I remember coming to my editor and saying, ā€˜Hey, we need to write about the Hunter Biden laptop.ā€™ And I was told this came from on high at Politico: Donā€™t write about the laptop, donā€™t talk about the laptop, donā€™t tweet about the laptop.

Two former reporters with Politico accused the outlet of suppressing negative stories about former President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden during the 2020 presidential election in a video clip posted to YouTube Thursday.

Dozens of former intelligence officials signed an October 2020Ā letterĀ published by Politico that claimed a bombshell New York PostĀ reportĀ about emails from a laptop supposedly abandoned by Hunter Biden ā€œhas all the classic earmarks of a Russian information operation.ā€ Puck News reporter Tara Palmeri and Axios reporter Marc Caputo discussed the Politico newsroomā€™s alleged approach to unflattering reports about the Bidens on Palmeriā€™s podcast, ā€œSomebodyā€™s Gotta Win,ā€ though the outlet has denied their allegations.

ā€œPolitico did that terrible,Ā ill-fated headline: 51 intelligence agents, or former intelligence agents, say that the Hunter Biden laptop was disinformation, or bore the hallmarks of disinformation. Turns out that story was closer to disinformation because the Hunter Biden laptop appeared to be true,ā€ Caputo told Palmeri, who responded. ā€œBut then Facebook also pulled all stories down about the Hunter Biden laptop, and I think Twitter did at the same time, too.ā€

WATCH:

TwitterĀ lockedĀ multiple accounts, including the New York Postā€™s and the personal account of then-White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany for sharing the Oct, 14, 2020Ā report, citing a ā€œhacked materialsā€ policy. DocumentsĀ releasedĀ to journalist Michael Shellenberger by Elon Musk show that the FBIĀ contactedĀ Twitter about the potential for leaks involving Hunter Biden prior to the New York Postā€™s report.

ā€œCorrect, they punishedĀ The New York Post, that didnā€™t help. I mean, Politico, my former employer and I knew at the time, didnā€™t do itself any favors,ā€ said Caputo. ā€œI was covering Biden at the time, and I remember coming to my editor and saying, ā€˜Hey, we need to write about the Hunter Biden laptop.ā€™ And I was told this came from on high at Politico: Donā€™t write about the laptop, donā€™t talk about the laptop, donā€™t tweet about the laptop. And the only thing Politico wound up writing was that piece that called it disinformation, which charitably could be called misinformation, at the least.ā€

Palmeri claimed to have experienced difficulty getting a story regarding Hunter Bidenā€™s purchase of a .38-caliber revolver in 2018 published. Hunter Biden wasĀ convictedĀ on three felony counts related to buying the gun in June 2024, but received aĀ pardonĀ from his father on Dec. 1.

BidenĀ pardonedĀ five other family members shortly before his term ended.

ā€œYeah, I mean, I had a hard time ā€” you know I wrote some pretty serious reporting on Hunter Biden, which actually ended up getting him prosecuted ā€” the story on the gun,ā€ Palmeri said, with Caputo responding, ā€œYeah! And I remember you consulted with me cause you had, you did the original report on the gun and you came to me like, ā€˜How do I write about this?ā€™ Iā€™m like, ā€˜Honestly, I donā€™t know.ā€™ā€

ā€œCause it was hard to get it done. I spent three months on it, I went to the laptop shop, and I did all of the reporting in Delaware, and I did all of that. But yeahĀ  it had, it had to be like much, it had to be 100% nailed down. I had everything, you know, the police reports, every, like, you know, Iā€™m a solid reporter. But I do wonder if it could have, if it would have been published a little quicker if it was a different type of story,ā€ Palmeri said. ā€œIt was the beginning of his administration, it was a honeymoon period ā€” you know what I mean?ā€

Caputo recounted that Hunter Bidenā€™s laptop was not the only story regarding the Bidens that was allegedly killed by Politicoā€™s editors.

ā€œSince weā€™re spilling tea about our former employer, I still have a copy of the story on my external hard drive. In 2019, a rival presidential Democratic campaign of Joe Bidenā€™s gave to me the tax lien ā€” the oppo research ā€” the tax lien on Hunter Biden for the period of time that he worked at Burisma,ā€ Caputo said. ā€œAnd I wrote what would have been a classic story saying, you know, ā€˜The former vice presidentā€™s son was slapped with a big tax lien for the period of time that he worked for this controversial Ukrainian oil concern, or natural gas concern, which is haunting his father on the campaign trail.ā€™ That story was killed by the editors, and they gave no explanation for that either.ā€

ā€œWe just get called, like, ā€˜the terrible mainstream media.ā€™ Itā€™s like you donā€™t understand the process there,ā€ Palmeri said, with Caputo responding, ā€œWell, you also donā€™t understand the dumb decisions of cowardly editors that are made above us.ā€

Politico disputed Caputoā€™s recollections in response to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation and sent a list ofĀ referencesĀ to their pastĀ reportingĀ on the Biden family.

ā€œItā€™s bullshit.Ā During the years referenced,Ā POLITICO journalists lead the way onĀ wide-ranging reportingĀ on the business dealings of Joe Bidenā€™s closest relatives.Ā Ben Schreckinger was probably the top reporter in the country reporting on these mattersā€”he literallyĀ wrote the bookĀ on it,ā€ a Politico spokesperson told the DCNF. ā€œThrough deeply reported coverageā€”both pre- and post-electionā€”POLITICO provided readers with a nuanced understanding of the dealings of James Biden, Hunter Biden, and other relatives of the president, along with the ethical questions they raised. Notably, POLITICO was the first to confirm that Hunter Bidenā€™s laptop contained genuine material and to report on the gun incident that led to his conviction.ā€
