Watch this short video to learn more about the Edmonton Commonwealth Walkway from Committee c0-chairs Dave Mowat and Carolyn Patton.
The Edmonton Commonwealth Walkway, a 10 kilometre section of River Valley trail running from the 100 Street Funicular to Government House Park, opens tomorrow. Edmontonians can discover the trail through this week’s Quest for the Golden Key Contest and could win their own “key to the city”, a family pass to Edmonton attractions and recreation centres.
The Game
In 1912, the Governor General of Canada opened Alberta’s nearly completed Legislature building using a ceremonial golden key with a clover handle. The key was made of gold that had been found in the North Saskatchewan River valley and, after the Legislature was opened, the key disappeared into that same valley. It hasn’t been seen since, but you can help find it!
The Golden Key is in a secret place, waiting to be found by contestants—but it’s not as easy as just finding the key. The winning player will have to free the key by opening a seven-digit combination lock. Players will follow seven daily clues and locate “key cards” along the Commonwealth Walkway to collect the seven combination numbers, then follow the final clue on day eight to find the key and try out the winning combination.
Key cards may be anywhere along, or near, the Edmonton Commonwealth Walkway. They will not be in plain view but players will not need to dig, climb, open or move anything to find them. Key cards will not be on private property or anywhere the public is not permitted, and will not be in dangerous locations.
The game runs Sept. 7 through 14. Follow @YEGWalkway on
