‘We have no idea who and what entered our country’

Retired San Diego Border Patrol Chief Patrol Agent Aaron Heitke said he was instructed by the Biden administration to not publicize arrests of illegal border crossers identified as “Significant Interest Aliens” with ties to terrorism.

Heitke testified before a U.S. House Committee on Homeland Security hearing on Wednesday about how Biden-Harris “open border policies have undermined our safety and security.”

“We had an exponential increase in Significant Interest Aliens … with significant ties to terrorism,” illegally entering in the U.S. Customs and Border Protection San Diego Sector, he said.

Prior to the Biden-Harris administration, the sector averaged 10 to 15 SIAs per year. “Once word was out that the border was far easier to cross, San Diego went to over 100 SIAs in 2022, way over 100 SIAs in 2023 and more than that this year,” he said.

“These are only the ones we caught,” meaning the number likely is higher because of the volume of gotaways, those who illegally cross the border and are not apprehended.

“At the time, I was told I could not release any information on this increase in SIA’s or mention any of the arrests,” Heitke testified. “The administration was trying to convince the public that there was no threat at the border.”

His testimony came as the greatest number of individuals on the U.S. federal terrorist watch list have been apprehended under the Biden-Harris administration of 1,856 since fiscal 2021 through August, The Center Square reported.

None of this would have happened if current federal laws enacted by Congress were enforced, he said.

“The only true consequence we have to slow down and discourage people from coming to the United States illegally is sending them back to their country of origin,” required under current law, he said.

Under the Biden-Harris administration, Border Patrol agents were instructed to do the opposite, he said. In three and half years, “I saw a steady decrease in countries we could send people back to.

“For the first time in my 25 years and under five different administrations, whether through neglect or on purpose, I saw a large-scale lapse in our ability to return people to their country of origin. The inability to send people home meant that most people being arrested for illegal entry would either have to be detained or released.”

Since January 2021, “on day one,” the Biden-Harris administration “made a point of decreasing the amount of detention space available nationwide,” noting that Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s funding for detention space has steadily been cut and private detention eliminated.

The “open border policies” and “the fact that so many illegal aliens were being released into the United States spread worldwide very quickly,” he said, resulting in an unprecedented influx of illegal entry into the country.

“The impacts to me and my agents were significant. Sectors were ordered to take in and process all the illegal aliens encountered on the border. The Border Patrol saw groups of hundreds and thousands coming into the United States and turning themselves in.”

The result was  “80% to 90%, sometimes 100% of the agents on duty [were taken] away from” the southwest border. There were miles of the border unmanned in Texas, Arizona and California, he said, where there was “no agent presence for weeks and months at a time.”

Foreign nationals “who did not want to be caught could simply walk in,” he said, referring to gotaways. They total at least more than 2 million since fiscal 2021, The Center Square first reported.

“We have no idea who and what entered our country over this time. Throughout 2022 and 2023, I sent agents to Texas and Arizona to count gotaways. Those sectors could not even put enough agents in the field to see what they had missed.”

U.S. Rep. Anthony D’Esposito, R-NY, then asked him, “What information do we have on the millions of known gotaways that have entered this country?”

“None,” Heitke replied.

“Zero information of millions of people – some of which have been found to be on the terror watchlist – we have zero information?” D’Esposito asked.

“Correct.”

Heitke was previously interviewed by the committee last year and described the level of national security threats that existed because they were forced to close checkpoints after an influx of illegal border crossers shifted to California. Agents were then required to shift manpower from the field to process and release into the country illegal border crossers, The Center Square reported. With their agents being pulled from the field, Heitke and others said Americans were unsafe and transnational criminal organizations were exploiting the open border to smuggle people and an unprecedented amount of fentanyl.

“Each time we asked for help in dealing with a new issue, it fell on deaf ears,” he said.

Dr. Phil Joins Tom Homan and ICE For Midnight Arrests Of Illegal Alien Criminals

Show host Dr. Phil joined border czar Tom Homan and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in a raid across the Chicago metropolitan area late Sunday night.

The television psychologist, whose full name is Phil McGraw, was filmed interrogating an alleged illegal Thai national alongside Homan and a posse of ICE officers during the Chicago operation. The video comes after President Donald Trump declared a national emergency at the southern border and ordered agencies to ramp up immigration enforcement, with ICE announcing 956 arrests on Sunday alone.

“This is an example of sanctuary cities, right?” Homan said. “We’ve got an illegal alien convicted of sex crimes involving children, and he’s walking the streets of Chicago … this is what we’re dealing with.”

“You’ve been charged with sex crimes with children?” Dr. Phil asked the alleged illegal alien.

“Not really,” the alleged illegal alien said.

“Not really?” Dr. Phil said. “And never been deported. Huh.”

“Let’s take him in and process him, lock him up,” Homan told nearby agents.

Dr. Phil said in an X post Sunday that he would be embedded in the Chicago operation, which aimed to target 270 “high-value targets” around Chicago.

“It’s a pretty high-risk mission we’re going on,” he said. “This truly is a targeted ICE mission, because they’re not sweeping neighborhoods like people are trying to imply.”

“These are known criminals and terrorists. We’re talking about murderers, child traffickers, child rapists. We’re talking about bad actors, both in the countries they’ve come from, and since they’ve been here in the United States,” the daytime television personality continued.

Dr. Phil — who spoke at Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally in October — has previously  signaled conflicted feelings about the president. He seemed to walk back his endorsement of Trump in an ambiguous interview with Piers Morgan in November, saying he “doesn’t like a lot of what he says or does.”

ICE has announced over 2,000 immigration-related arrests throughout Trump’s first week in office. Colombian President Gustavo Petro initially refused to accept U.S. deportation flights into his country over the weekend, but immediately capitulated after Trump threatened steep tariffs against the country.

Immigration actions, deportation flights begin

The White House says deportation flights have begun. In Illinois, the Pritzker administration is conducting a “know-your-rights” campaign for foreign nationals in the country illegally.

At an unrelated event Friday, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker said they’re working across state agencies to promote the “know-your-rights” campaign.

“Making sure people know what they should do if an agent shows up and asks them for a proof of citizenship and a proof of residency,” Pritzker said.

He’s not aware of the Trump administration communicating with state agencies, Pritzker said.

“And so it’s a challenge, but we’re communicating with all of our agencies and making sure that again ‘know your rights’ is really what we’re trying to communicate to all the parents,” Pritzker said.

The governor reiterated that he thinks violent criminal illegal immigrants should be deported but continued to vow protection for those living mostly law-abiding lives in Illinois. As for possibly running afoul of federal law, Pritzker said he’s not scared.

“I’m unafraid,” Pritzker said. “I know what my job is. I’m going to protect the people of Illinois, I’m gonna do what’s right. I’m going to make sure that [Trump] is following the law, that the federal government is following the law, and that we’re following the law.”

At an unrelated event in Oak Law, Illinois, Friday, Gov. J.B. Pritzker takes questions about immigration enforcement actions taking place and his administration’s “know your rights” campaign for undocumented immigrants living in Illinois.

Speaking remotely to the World Economic Forum Thursday, President Donald Trump said his administration is bringing a “revolution of common sense.”

“My administration is acting with unprecedented speed to fix the disasters we’ve inherited from a totally inept group of people,” Trump said, referring to the administration of his predecessor, Joe Biden.

Under the Biden administration, millions of non-citizens crossed the southern U.S. border. More than 50,000 of them were transported from overburdened border communities to Chicago with migrant sanctuary policies in place.

Under the Trump administration, which took office Jan. 20, Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced within the first three days that they made more than 530 arrests and lodged 373 detainers.

Friday morning, the White House said deportation flights have begun.

“President Trump is sending a strong and clear message to the entire world: if you illegally enter the United States of America, you will face severe consequences,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt wrote on X.

Illinois U.S. Rep. Mary Miller, R-Hindsboro, said “Every illegal alien in the United States must be deported.”

“Americans deserve to be safe in our country,” Miller said.

She posted on social media a message thanking Trump and his border czar, Tom Homan, “for taking immediate action to secure our communities from violent foreign criminals.”

ICE says on its website the agency’s Enforcement and Removal Operations workforce consists of more than 7,700 law enforcement and non-law enforcement support personnel across 25 domestic field offices and 208 locations nationwide, 30 overseas postings and multiple temporary duty travel assignments along the border.

“Members of the public who have information about foreign fugitives are urged to contact ICE by calling the ICE Tip Line at 1 (866) 347-2423 or internationally at 001-1802-872-6199,” the agency said. “They can also file a tip online by completing ICE’s online tip form.”
