Education Minister David Eggen is calling on all junior and senior high school students to apply for the 2018-19 Minister’s Youth Council.

Approximately 32 junior and senior high school students will be selected for the council. As members, students will meet with the Minister of Education and Alberta Education staff throughout the 2018/19 school year to discuss their education priorities and issues.

Minister Eggen was joined today by the current council to encourage students of all background, identities, and perspectives to be part of next year’s council.

Your voice matters – and I want to hear from you on how we can work together to make life better for all Alberta students. This year’s Minister’s Youth Council has been a great experience and I look forward to what next year has in store.”

The Minister’s Youth Council holds its first meeting in September, and meets periodically to provide valuable perspectives and insights to the minister on the shape of Alberta’s education system. Alberta Education is inviting interested students to apply, ensuring that all students have an opportunity to participate.

The council gives students the opportunity to build their leadership skills, make an impact on the education system and leave a legacy that will last well into the future.

“The Minister’s Youth Council has taught me to really appreciate, listen and work with every kind of person. The fact that our government cares about what its youth has to say is incredible. I really hope that our voices can impact key areas where change is needed the most, such as improved mental and sexual health education, curriculum that is suitable for all learning types and more! This council has made me excited for the future and has inspired lots of youth across the province.”

• Junior and senior high students from across Alberta are eligible to apply for the Minister’s Youth Council.
• The deadline to apply is March 30, 2018.
• Council members will meet in Edmonton up to three times per year.
