The community spirit in the room at Saturday night’s gala event in support of the Red Deer Hospice was on full display. Rarely do you fill a room with so many caring and deeply-committed supporters of an organization. They came out in full force to raise money so they can continue to provide the specialized nursing, pain and symptom management, and emotional and spiritual support that eases their residents’ pain and discomfort, and prepares them and their loved ones to say goodbye.
One primary challenge that faces the organization is the need for expansion. With only 10 beds available, it’s an ongoing struggle to not only keep the organization operating on a day to day basis, let alone finance an expansion. It’s worth noting 60% of Hospice’s annual budget comes directly from fundraising activities. Board member Jim McPherson explains:
