Opioids Don’t Discriminate
From Turning Point Society of Central Alberta
Many people are under the impression that opioid use affects only homeless people, or people with previous addiction problems. That stigma is causing a big problem. The fact is opioid use is a global crisis, and it’s impacting Central Alberta residents, no matter their race, age, income, education or background.
Research indicates stigma is one of the main reasons people avoid treatment and support. Turning Point Society of Central Alberta and agency partners are working to break the stigma, by providing information about opioid use. They’re working to address the judgments about people who use drugs, and they’re providing a safe, supportive environment for people to seek help.
That’s one of the reasons Turning Point brought a special exhibit to Red Deer called Opioids Don’t Discriminate. This interactive event aims to reduce stigma, judgments and biases about people who use opioids, and those affected by opioid drug use. The aim is to create a better understanding about opioid drug use, local available support and what people can do if they or someone they know is using opioids.
Please take the time to watch this video produced here in Red Deer explaining “our” shared challenge and inviting conversation that could lead to solutions.
