Step Into The Saga
DICKSON, AB – The Danish Canadian Museum invites you to explore the rich history of Danish settlers in Canada, a saga that began over 1000 years ago. Constructed in 1933, the Verbena Dormitory served as a boarding house for local high school girls from pioneer farm families in the area. It now boasts over 5000 artifacts, thirteen acres of green space, and traditional Danish inspired delicacies at the Saga Café.
Our goal is to inspire, engage, and educate the public about the history of Danes living in Canada. The Danish Canadian Museum serves as a cultural center to display and celebrate the story of Danish Canadians both past and present.
Our invitation to “Step into the Saga” takes on special meaning to those who join us and enjoy the many special activities and events we put on every year. The Mother’s Day Luncheon and Father’s Day Pit Roast are a popular tradition at the museum.
The Museum is located on the site where the people of Dickson gathered every July 1st from the early 1900’s to the 1960’s for the annual Dominion Day picnic. Today we celebrate with complimentary cake and coffee. Aebleskiver ‘n’ Jam Day challenges our guests to and ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT menu feature! Aebleskiver (“pancake puffs”) is a traditional Danish dessert served with jam. Our Old Fashion Picnic is a great family outing featuring a Danish service followed by a long table lunch, pie contest and games.
Our most popular event of the year, typically attracting over 1000 visitors who are interested in Viking lore, is Vikings Days. Through the cooperation of Viking re-enactment groups, visitors can tour the Viking encampment showing living accommodations, cooking methods and crafts. You will also see Viking warriors demonstrate the use of swords, shields, axes and archery. A favorite for everyone is the battle with the Vikings, where children are given “swords” to fight it out with the mighty, fearsome Vikings. A Viking Feast is also offered but you need to be quick to purchase tickets!
